Excursion to the National Blood Centre and Snake Farm

On August 14, 2024, our Year 1 students took an educational trip to the Thai Red Cross Society, visiting the National Blood Centre and the Snake Farm at the Queen Saovabha Memorial Institute (QSMI) in Bangkok. This trip offered students valuable insights into the important roles these institutions play in healthcare. The Philosophy of Medicine class was led by Dr. Weerachat Sompong, Assistant Dean for Administrative Affairs, along with Dr. Sranya Phaisawang, Associate Dean for International Affairs, and Instructor Kantaphong Thongrong, M.D.

At the National Blood Centre, students learned about the importance of blood donation and observed the processes that ensure safe and effective blood transfusions. This experience highlighted the critical role of blood donation in supporting life-saving medical treatments.

The visit continued at the Snake Farm, part of the Queen Saovabha Memorial Institute (QSMI), where Asst. Prof. Dr. Suchai Suteparuk, M.D., introduced students to herpetology. They explored snake venoms and the production of anti-venom serums, gaining a deeper appreciation for the scientific efforts involved in venom research and life-saving antidote development.

This annual field trip demonstrates MDKMITL’s dedication to offering students diverse learning experiences that contribute to the welfare of humanity. By exposing them to various aspects of healthcare, we aim to inspire future compassionate and knowledgeable healthcare professionals with a global perspective, emphasizing the importance of 21st-century skills in today’s competitive environment.
