MDKMITL Y1 Annual Field Trip to the National Blood Centre and Snake Farm
On Wednesday, 13 August 2025, our Year 1 medical students embarked on an educational excursion to the Thai Red Cross Society in Bangkok, visiting both the National Blood Centre and the Snake Farm at the Queen Saovabha Memorial Institute (QSMI). The trip, part of the Philosophy of Medicine course, was guided by Dr. Sranya Phaisawang, Associate Dean for International Affairs, together with Instructor Asst. Prof. Theerapan Songnuy, M.D., Instructor Asst. Prof. Ratakorn Srisuttee, Ph.D., and Instructor Asst. Prof. Fingani A. Mphande-Nyasulu, Ph.D.
At the National Blood Centre, students explored the vital processes behind blood donation, storage, and distribution, gaining first-hand understanding of how these efforts save countless lives. They also learned about the stringent safety protocols that ensure high-quality and effective blood transfusions.
The second part of the visit took place at the Snake Farm, where students discovered the fascinating work of venom research and the production of anti-venom serums. The session offered valuable insights into the science, innovation, and dedication required to produce life-saving treatments for snakebite victims.
This annual field trip reflects MDKMITL’s commitment to broadening students’ perspectives through diverse, real-world learning opportunities. By engaging with key institutions in Thailand’s healthcare system, our students develop the knowledge, empathy, and global awareness essential for future medical professionals in the 21st century.
We sincerely thank the teams at the National Blood Centre and the Queen Saovabha Memorial Institute (QSMI) for their warm welcome and generous sharing of expertise.
