On Tuesday, February 13, 2024, this very special installment of the 5th Doctor Train led by Associate Dean of Innovation and Research Anawat Sermswan, M.D., and Associate Dean for International Affairs, Sranya Phaisawang, Ph.D., brought our team of dedicated MDKMITL physicians, nurses, administration team and support staff, along with the wonderful State Railway of Thailand (SRT) team, to the northern province of Uttaradit.
We were honored to welcome our special guests from the University of Wisconsin Green Bay including Assoc. Prof. Brian Merkel, Ph.D, Chair of Human Biology, Assoc. Prof. Debra Pearson, Ph.D., Director of the Master of Nutrition and Integrated Health Program, and Assoc. Prof. Amanda Nelson, Ph.D, Associate Dean at the School of Science, Engineering & Technology to this one-of-a-kind community health initiative.
The 6-hour journey from Bangkok to Uttaradit on the Doctor Train introduced different cultures and foods from the many provinces along the route up north.
Safely arriving at the Uttaradit Province, the entire team conducted a site inspection to get ready for the following day’s events.
This 5th Doctor Train hallmarks the commitment between two great institutions, the State Railway of Thailand and Thailand’s 1st international medical program at MDKMITL. Our partnership signifies that our efforts to provide easy and accessible healthcare to the SRT family and surrounding communities is greatly needed and appreciated by all. Our comprehensive health stations start with registration and basic diagnostics, then onwards to general screenings, cardiology screenings including Echo and EKG stations, allergies and liver function screenings and this year, we’ve added the newest station, Cognitive Neurological screenings and counselling for the community.
Our international guests were able to see our setup process and we would like to thank the entire State Railway of Thailand Team for helping us with all of the planning and execution of this vital community health outreach program.
“It takes a team to make head way and if you want to go fast, go alone but if you want to go far, go together.”
Our Doctor Train Project will no doubt go far because we are going together. Again, we would like to thank everyone involved in this event especially, the Governor of the State Railway of Thailand, Mr. Nirut Maneephan, Executive Consultant to the SRT, K. Pathira Euarchukiati and the rest of the SRT team for their outstanding support for the Doctor Train and for MDKMITL.

The MDKMITL x SRT Doctor Train Experience Goes Global as We Welcome the University of Wisconsin Green Bay
The 5th Doctor Train Project, initiated by Thailand’s 1st international medical program at the Faculty of Medicine, KMITL (MDKMITL) in collaboration with the State Railway of Thailand (SRT) is a wonderful example of synergistic partnerships at the highest level. Our two institutions signed an MOU a couple years back and we are now thriving together to develop fruitful community healthcare programs for the SRT family and its surrounding communities.
The Doctor Train Project brings the specialized medical services of MDKMITL physicians and instructors to provide quick and effective screening stations to the communities of the SRT nationwide. Our comprehensive series of checkups and screenings include General Health, Echo and EKG stations, Pulmonary Function, Liver Function, Allergy and Neuro-Cognitive Screenings for the SRT family and their relatives along with the surrounding communities, all at no cost to the patients.
Our innovative approach offers the best of the best to communities along the SRT train network and every community that we visit has been eager to help contribute to our efforts.
This year, our first Doctor Train initiative of 2024 has caught the attention of global institutions including another one of our valued MOU partner institutions, the University of Wisconsin Green Bay (UWGB). MDKMITL was honored to welcome Assoc. Prof. Brian Merkel, Ph.D., Chair of Human Biology, UWGB, Assoc. Prof. Debra Pearson, Ph.D., Director of the Master of Nutrition and Integrated Health Program, UWGB, and Assoc. Prof. Amanda Nelson, Ph.D., Associate Dean at the School of Science, Engineering and Technology, UWGB, to experience the Doctor Train Project to Uttaradit Province firsthand.
The 3-day integrated health-culture experience offered our guests a better understanding of the Thai healthcare system along with our Doctor Train objectives of providing high quality medical screenings and services for the State Railway of Thailand family and their surrounding communities. The commitment and dedication from both MDKMITL and SRT have proven to be a recipe for sustainable success in strengthening the health of Thailand’s irreplaceable workforce which keeps the nation running on its tracks.
The UWGB contingent was so impressed with the Doctor Train Project, that they now would like their students from the U.S. to be able to learn along side with the best and brightest at MDKMITL. We had many enriching conversations about how we can begin the student exchange between our two institutions and we look forward to sending our Thai medical students out to UWGB in the near future as well.
On behalf of MDKMITL, we are thankful and appreciate our strong partnerships with the SRT and UWGB, and cannot wait to see what the future holds for our upcoming collaborations.
